Diggs (ACL) participated in on-field work in uniform and without a brace on his right knee at Day 3 of OTAs on Thursday, Taylor Kyles of CLNSMedia.com reports. The Patriots' photo release of OTAs reveals Diggs looking healthy and without any apparent hindrances related to his right knee, in which he suffered a torn right ACL on Oct. 27. While the 31-year-old wideout likely still has some hurdles to overcome in his rehab before being cleared for contact, his ability to get in some on-field work at voluntary OTAs lends further optimism to the notion that he'll be a full-go for Week 1. Since signing Diggs to a three-year, $69 million deal in free agency, New England added a speedy vertical threat to the wide receiver room in the form of third-round pick Kyle Williams, plus a capable pass-catcher in the backfield in second-rounder TreVeyon Henderson. Those additions don't represent huge threats to Diggs' position as the clear top target for second-year quarterback Drake Maye, health permitting, but Henderson and Williams are explosive options that this offense had otherwise been lacking in incumbent wideouts DeMario Douglas, Kayshon Boutte, Kendrick Bourne, Mack Hollins, Ja'Lynn Polk (shoulder) and Javon Baker.

Practicing without knee brace

Could be ready for Week 1

Evan Lazar of the Patriots' official site relays via Adam Schefter of ESPN that there's reportedly optimism Diggs, who is bouncing back from a torn right ACL in his right knee that he suffered Oct. 27, could be ready for Week 1 of the coming season. Given the timing of his injury, Diggs being available for the Patriots' regular-season opener is far from a lock, but Mike Reiss of ESPN recently noted that league sources described the wideout as ahead of schedule in his recovery and already running full speed, while in the process of gaining increased comfort in terms of cutting and changing direction. In any case, added context with regard to Diggs' progress will arrive once he re-takes the field in the coming months, and once he's deemed fit for game action, the 31-year-old will be counted on to establish himself as a high-volume target for second-year QB Drake Maye. It's possible that the Patriots aren't done adding to their WR corps, but for now DeMario Douglas, Kayshon Boutte, Kendrick Bourne, Mack Hollins, Ja'Lynn Polk and Javon Baker are on hand to compete for slotting behind Diggs, who New England signed to a reported three-year, $69 million deal (with $26 million guaranteed) on Tuesday.
Headed to New England

Diggs (knee) and the Patriots agreed on a three-year, $69 million contract including $26 million guaranteed Tuesday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports. Diggs will head to New England after an injury-shorted campaign with the Texans in 2024. The wide receiver caught 47 of 64 targets for 496 yards and three touchdowns while also adding eight yards and a score on the ground over eight games with Houston before suffering a season-ending torn ACL in Week 8 against the Colts. Once he moves past the injury, Diggs will have a clear path to a heavy target load as Drake Maye's de facto WR1 with the Patriots in 2025.
Visiting New England

Diggs (knee) is visiting with the Patriots, Chad Graff of The Athletic reports. The free-agent wideout is unlikely to re-sign with the Texans in light of their trade for Christian Kirk, but New England looks like a similarly good option for fantasy production, offering budding franchise quarterback Drake Maye in combination with one of the weakest WR rooms in the league. It isn't clear Diggs would be able to help at the outset of the season, considering he's 31 years old and rehabbing the ACL tear he suffered in late October. He presumably had surgery at some point in November, giving him about a 10-month gap between the ACL repair and Week 1 of 2025. It's been done before, but typically by players in their 20s, not 31-year-olds that had already shown major signs of decline pre-injury.
May move on to greener pastures

Texans GM Nick Caserio suggested he's open to re-signing Diggs (knee), but Jonathan M. Alexander of the Houston Chronicle thinks it's unlikely to happen unless the wideout accepts less money than he could get from other teams. Be it in Houston or elsewhere, there's no question Diggs will have to settle for less than he's accustomed to earning, as he's 31 years old and suffered an ACL tear in late October. He's set to become a free agent while still rehabbing the knee injury, with no assurance of being ready for Week 1 of 2025. The Texans figure to be in the market for high-end WR talent even if they ultimately re-sign Diggs, having lost Tank Dell to a multi-ligament knee tear in late December. Although he's six years younger than Diggs, there's not much reason for optimism about Dell being a significant contributor in 2025. The Texans do at least have Nico Collins, who emerged as one of the league's bonafide No. 1 receivers the past two seasons.
Goes on IR, done for season

The Texans placed Diggs (knee) on injured reserve Tuesday. Houston quickly moved Diggs off the 53-man roster after head coach DeMeco Ryans relayed earlier Tuesday that an MRI confirmed that the standout receiver suffered a season-ending torn ACL in his right knee on a non-contact play late in third quarter of Sunday's 23-20 win over the Colts. The Texans will look to get by with Tank Dell, Xavier Hutchinson, Robert Woods and John Metchie in their Week 9 matchup with the Jets on Thursday, but top wideout Nico Collins (hamstring) appears to be trending toward a return from IR in Week 10 and should help offset the loss of Diggs. Meanwhile, the soon-to-be 31-year-old Diggs will head into free agency this offseason rebounding from a major injury after producing a 47-496-3 receiving line on 64 targets through his eight games with Houston.
Tears ACL, out for season

Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans announced Tuesday that Diggs suffered a torn ACL in his right knee during Sunday's 23-20 win over the Colts and will miss the rest of the season, Jonathan M. Alexander of the Houston Chronicle reports. Diggs suffered the non-contact right knee injury late in the third quarter of Sunday's win, and after he was sent in for an MRI on Monday, the Texans confirmed that he suffered structural damage to his knee. Both the nature and timing of the injury are brutal developments for Diggs, who was playing out the 2024 campaign on a one-year, $22.52 million restructured "prove-it" contract with the Texans. Diggs is now scheduled to hit free agency while facing a recovery timetable that may put his availability for the start of the 2025 campaign in jeopardy. As for the Texans, Tank Dell, Xavier Hutchinson, Robert Woods and John Metchie are left as the team's top four receivers for a Week 9 matchup with the Jets, though No. 1 wideout Nico Collins (hamstring) appears poised to return from injured reserve Week 10 when first eligible.
Estimated as DNP Monday

Diggs (knee) was listed as a non-participant in Monday's estimated practice, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports. Coach DeMeco Ryans has yet to give any updates on his star wideout after Diggs went down with a non-contact knee injury in Sunday's eventual win over the Colts. The Texans now have a quick Week 9 turnaround with a Thursday night game against the Jets up next. Nico Collins (IR, hamstring) isn't eligible to return until Week 10, so the Texans could be down to Tank Dell, Xavier Hutchinson, John Metchie and Robert Woods at wide receiver versus New York.
Suffers noncontact knee injury

Diggs suffered a noncontact knee injury in Sunday's 23-20 win over the Colts, and coach DeMeco Ryans said after the game that the wide receiver's injury is still being evaluated, DJ Bien-Aime of ESPN.com reports. There is a wide range of possible outcomes for Diggs' knee injury, but the noncontact nature of the injury points to the possibility of a torn ACL, which would be season-ending. An update on Diggs' status should surface in the coming days as additional tests are performed on the injury.
